Beside the obvious questions of color and style to be decided by an individual’s personal taste, to determine what type of rug or what size rug is needed for a given location, you should take several factors into consideration.

Of course, price will play an important role in that decision. Within your budgetary parameters, however, the type of construction and quality you choose will be a key factor in ensuring that you will be happy with your new purchase. Putting a light colored needlepoint runner in a foyer or hallway is not usually recommended. Why? Even top quality needlepoints are not made to stand up to high traffic, especially in entry areas where dirt and salt can damage the rug. Conversely, a beautiful soumak flatweave, which has a much denser construction to resist dirt and traffic, could be perfect for such an application. The needlepoint can be a wonderful addition to a bedroom room, a “barefoot” area, where the soumak with its rougher texture might be less desirable from a comfort standpoint. These are just two examples of how placement of different constructions should be taken into consideration.

Another factor you will certainly want to consider is size. From small scatter rugs to palatial carpets, both the actual room size and the specific decorating scheme are critical in determining the size of the rug best suited to your needs. Dining room rugs need to be sized for the placement of the chairs and the table as well as for the absolute measurements of the room. Take into account how much of the pattern will be hidden or obscured under the table. Obviously, a center medallion design would not be the ideal choice for this purpose.

Living rooms can have a wide array of layouts and elements. Sofas, chairs. occasional tables, and lighting fixtures can be arranged in a single unified configuration or in separate seating or "conversation" areas. In either case, your rugs should play a key role in focussing and enhancing the placement of your other furnishings. In effect, they should function as the "foundation" of your design plan for any area in which they are used. You'll be 'less bored of your space' with a seasonal change

Kelly Olive's decor changes with the weather.

Every winter, the 25-year-old chooses warm shades of purple and grey, infusing it into her bedding and self-made abstract artwork. Come spring, Olive changes it up with colours that scream summer - white, yellow, green and red splashed on the sheets and walls.

Though a biannual update makes perfect sense to Olive, she says her friends think it's "weird." In fact, until recently she thought she was the only one with the odd seasonal habit. But being a confident nonconformist sort, Olive is sticking to her plan.

"When spring is coming and you stop wearing winter jackets, that's the switch time for me," explains Olive. "When it's sunny and nice outside, it should be sunny and nice inside my home. It refreshes it. You get less bored of your space."

Walk into any home decor store right now and it's clear that Olive and others like her are on to something. After a long cold winter, Canadians desperate for a reprieve are refreshing their homes to welcome gentler weather.

In response, stores are bursting with fun bright hues of yellow, green, blue and coral infused in everything from pillows and rugs to furniture and accessories.

Andrea Mills, design spokeswoman for Ikea Canada, likens a spring home makeover to a wardrobe update. Just as people tuck away their winter clothes at the first sign of spring and buy a few new pieces for a different look, she says, the same can be done for the home.

"The change of season, especially into summer, is a time of renewal," says Mills. "The days are longer and lighter. There's just a new feeling in the air and it's a good time for change and to clean up. It's a time when a lot of people start exercising more and going out more and socializing more, so it's nice to celebrate that and reflect that in your home as well."

Refreshing a tired-looking space can be as simple as rearranging furniture or splashing a new coat of paint on baseboards and trim, on one wall or an entire room. Ottawa interior designer Ellen Lee suggests dry earthy neutrals such as pebbles, sand colours and greys since they're lighter and less insulating than darker shades.

"When it's drier it gives an airier feel, so when you're walking through the space it feels very clean, it feels very refreshing but it's not boring," says Lee. "You don't get tired of those colours all that often. With accents you can go for brighter, but only for accents because you don't know if you're going to change your mind later on.

"Particular colours come and go and your tastes change, and if you stay with some of the drier neutral colours for some of your bigger walls and some of your furniture, you'll have a lot more to go on. As the year changes, you can change up the decor a bit more easily."

Pillows, throws and mats also transform a space. Frank Turco, Home Depot's senior manager of trend and design, says the fruits and florals on today's fashion runways have found their way onto drapery, sofas and scatter rugs. For those who can't afford to reupholster, he says slipcovers, throws and pillows in vibrant shades and patterns can make a tired piece of furniture look fresh again.

Texture also plays a role. Toronto interior designer Michelle Mawby says spring means putting away cashmere throws, velvet drapery and shearling rugs and bringing out linen or silk drapery and cotton pillows. Texture makes a home interesting, she explains, but in warmer weather it should be light and airy.

Still, don't think seasonal decorating has to be costly. Start by cleaning the windows to bring in more light, says Lee, or remove one chair to open the space. And if money is tight, head to the hardware store.

"If something is not the right colour, spray paint it," says Mawby.

TIPS TO BRIGHTEN UP A HOME

Do your rooms feel tired? Here are some perk-up tips from the experts:

■ It's a lifestyle thing. Do you use your living room as an entertainment room or is it a room where you watch TV? Frank Turco, of Home Depot, says examining how you use it will better prepare it for the season. He says a casual room calls for seagrass or jute area rug on the floor, natural wood throughout, an open and airy feel and white and natural fabrics throughout, while a formal room begs for more tailored or sophisticated accents.

■ Make it feel good. If yellow is your favourite colour, paint or accessorize in yellow or invest in picture frames or artwork that have yellow in them. Says Turco

■ Look for bargains all year long. Think of more than the designer stores. Check out the mall's home decor stores for inexpensive items and then collect them over time.

Says Toronto interior designer Michelle Mawby, "For $250, you can probably bring in a lot of nice items if you searched in the right places."

Pull the rug out ... and repair it

Sometimes magic carpet rides fall to earth. Beautiful, patterned Oriental rugs, even expensive, high-quality ones from the far reaches of the globe, have accidents.

Bound edges come undone from wear or mishap. Furniture and foot traffic wear down their pile.

Fringe gets caught in doors, tangled in vacuum cleaners, gnawed by four-legged friends.

No matter how painstakingly they are made – by villages or nomads, on looms of wood or metal, knotted in the Persian style or Turkish, hand tufted or machine-made – eventually, they are dirtied by shoes, spilled on by partygoers, spit up on by crawling babies, tinkled on … and worse … by naughty pets.

Rugs with spots and rips or entire missing chunks make their way to rug repair rooms, if they’re lucky.

There, attention and mending makes them presentable again. Their once-dilapidated state stops being an embarrassment to their owners. Lovingly restored, they return to full glory.
But a good transformation doesn’t always happen without some homework.

Choose a rug restorer with care; No. 1 is the shop’s reputation. No. 2 is to ask and decide whether they really sound knowledgeable. No. 3 is to ask to see other repairs they have done. There are a lot of companies that do the wrong things.

The workrooms at Mark Gonsenhauser’s Rug & Carpet Superstore in Virginia Beach stay busy.
“When a rug comes in for cleaning and is damaged as well,” Gonsenhauser said, turning to a computer in his showroom, “we begin here.”

A menu of services offers spruce-ups like deodorizing, moth-proofing, mildew treatments, urine removal, color touch-ups, hand-serging, patching, turning fringe under. The list goes on and on.
“This is America,” Gonsenhauser said, joking. “You can have what you want.”

Most often, Oriental rugs are re-fringed, rebound, straightened, rewoven or cleaned, he said. Customers looking to protect their original investment often say, “Do whatever it is that you need to do.”
Back in the 1970s, Gonsenhauser, who learned the rug business from his father, studied the art of rug repair in Iran.

Owning a rug that looks a bit disheveled doesn’t necessarily mean it’s been abused.
The finest and best rugs will eventually show wear, he said. The sides of an Oriental rug – the bound edges, or selvages, that act like bumpers on cars – come undone or wear thin with time. If the selvage damage gets bad and eats into warp and weft (the threads that form the rug’s canvas backing), the patterned edges of the rug itself might need reweaving and re-piling. At the ends of the rug, fringe wears off and, if left unattended, so do the warp threads of the rug itself.
“In our business, it’s a stitch in time saves nine,” Gonsenhauser said. “You have to catch the damage before it gets worse.”

Taking action sooner rather than later is advice common to the business.

To make repairs to a rug’s pile, Gonsenhauser’s rug restorers use wool imported from India, Nepal or England and wools that are semi-worsted, hand-spun and machine-spun. The options allow restorers to capture subtleties in color and thickness.

“This is the heart of our repairing,” he said, touching hanks of different kinds of wool hanging from racks. “You’ve got to have the wool.”

Gonsenhauser also keeps a stack of salvaged pieces of old rugs so that, rather than reweaving, which can become expensive, patches can be fashioned.

Upstairs in his repair shop, an antique, 150-year-old Persian Hamadan colored with vegetable dyes was recently restored down to the warp and weft threads, which were rewoven before carefully selected strands of wool in varying shades were knotted, two strands at a time, into the canvas to re-pile the rug.

Typically, repair work is hardly more modern than the tools and techniques originally used to make the rug.

In this case, the area being worked on lay over a section of pipe. Beeswax lubricated the curved needles or hooks going through the tight canvas. Knots were tied by hand. Simple pairs of scissors snipped the wool to the right height.

Success or failure lies in the hands of the person doing the repair.

“To do it right, you’ve got to have a sense of mix and match and of how to monkey around a little bit to get the wool right, the color right, the knots right. To be a good restorer, you have to be in tune with the rug,” Gonsenhauser said. “You’re always learning another trick. It’s ultimately in the eye and hands. Anybody can make wine, but certain people make great wines. It’s the same thing here.”

The cost of minor repairs can be small compared to the original cost of a rug.

Gonsenhauser pulled a machine-made Karastan out of a storage bin. A 1-inch-diameter hole had to be rewoven. It would cost the owner $120 to re-pile the spot and $99 to clean the 6-by-9-foot Karastan, a small investment for a rug that once sold for $1,800.

Some damage can’t be pinned on a single incident. It can come from a lack of regular care and can be prevented at home.

People think rugs wear out from frequent walking on them.
“In reality what goes wrong is that sand gets into the pile and acts as an emery board, cutting off the wool,” Gonsenhauser said.

He recommends that, besides regular vacuuming, every six months or so rug owners employ a simple trick. Flip the rug and vacuum the back. Dust and sand will fall out onto the floor, where it can be swept up and the rug’s pile freed of abrading debris.

How to Maintain Antique and Semi-Antique Rugs

In the rug and carpet industry a rug that is over 100 years old is considered an antique. At 50 years a rug is considered semi-antique. It may seem that rugs of that age are not desirable, but in fact they are very much in demand. Whether a hand made Oriental from Iran or a hand hooked piece of Americana, old rugs have a unique appeal. For example Interior Designers use old rugs to create ambiance in a space. Think of “Mediterranean Tuscan” décor with a beautiful Old Persian rug, or a “Shabby Chic” bedroom with a vintage hooked wool floral rug.

You may want to have a look in your attic for hidden treasure of an old rug and consider having it restored. And what about that old heirloom rug your grandmother gave you? You may be surprised at how beautiful it looks after a restoration.

The types of issues usually found in old rugs are stains, holes and missing, damaged or discolored fringes. All of these damages can be restored if the damage is not too far gone. Old fringes can be removed and new fringe added. Discoloration and fading of colors may also be corrected, depending on the extent of the problem. Even dry rot can be stopped and repaired on some rugs if it is done properly and the area is not too large. And of course a good cleaning by a certified professional rug cleaning facility is a good place to start to restore your old rug.

After you have your rug restored you will want to maintain it by doing the following:

-Use a rug pad under your rug. This will help protect the rug from wear.
-Be very careful in vacuuming your rug. It is recommended to avoid vacuums with a beater bar.
-Have your rug cleaned every 3 years or so by a certified professional rug cleaning facility. We recommend visiting the Carpet and Rug Institute website (www.carpet-rug.org) to find a certified professional rug cleaning facility in your area. Dry Cleaning may be necessary.
-You may want to get an appraisal to determine the value of your rug. Once appraised you can check with your insurance carrier as to the level of coverage you may want to carry.

The Best Rug Pad for Over Carpet

Just because you are laying a rug over carpeting does not mean you don't need a pad. A quality pad under your rug is very important as it will extend the life of your rug and protect it from wear and slippage as well as make the rug lay smoothly to make vacuuming easier.

The biggest problem with laying a rug over carpet is the rippling and bunching of the rug. This is especially an issue around the legs of your furniture. We have a solution to this problem. We recommend a pad by Teebaud that is very effective for over carpet.

Mark Gonsenhauser’s “Rugs of Love” donation program places cleaned, donated rugs with charities that need them or can distribute them to families that need the extra warmth and comfort. Rugs that are donated are cleaned by Mark Gonsenhauser’s Rug and Carpet Superstore at no charge, the person donating them receives the necessary tax deduction receipt, and the rug is offered to a local charity.

The idea became a reality when recently a couple brought in two rugs that they no longer wanted.
Gonsenhauser realized that with a cleaning these rugs could be valuable to a charity or family. He
connected with the Ronald McDonald House in Norfolk and the refurbished rugs were placed there at no charge to the couple nor the Ronald McDonald House.

“For most people rugs are décor. But for someone who does not have stable heat or needs to feel

charity organizations, but now we are proud to have a program that we can call our own and try to

Custom Cut Rug Pads

So you just purchased a beautiful new rug and are wondering if you really need a rug pad laid under it. The answer is, yes you do. All rugs should have a pad under them. Especially if you have a fine hand made Oriental rug. If properly cared for, your Oriental rug can last for many generations.

Contrary to popular belief, a rug pad is primarily to protect your rug. Although a good pad does protect your hard wood floors as well.

A premium quality pad under your rug is very important. A quality pad will help preserve your rug from wear and slippage for many years and will extend the life of your rug. Think of the beating a rug takes from foot traffic. A pad will lessen the effects of that by acting as a shock absorber, cushioning the impact of foot traffic.
A good pad also prevents slippage, helps the rug lay flat and makes vacuuming much easier.

There are all sorts of rug pad materials on the market for use over hard floors but we have chosen a material that we think is superior. We recommend a rug underlay called "Cushion Grip". Cushion Grip is a premium quality pad. The material is made of carpet fibers that have been fused together and then needle punched to a waffled rubberized backing material that is non slip. The fused fibers are also coated with a rough surface to help hold the rug to the pad.

Cushion grip is guaranteed to retain its non-slip, non-skid properties for at least 10 years with proper maintenance. The rubberized waffle texture backing holds very firmly. This makes for a slip free transition when walking from your hard surface floor onto the rug and visa versa. This pad also helps prevent ripples around the legs of your furniture.

Cushion Grip padding is about 1/4 inch thick. It is the most effective rug pad to use for hardwood, laminate wood, tile, vinyl and concrete. It will hold well to any hard surface floor.

The other major benefit of this pad is that we custom cut it to fit your rug's actual dimensions. This makes for a perfect fit with no trimming necessary. This is great for Oriental rugs that may be an odd or non generic size. For example if your Persian rug is slightly irregular in shape we cut the pad to its shape. We also cut the pad about two inches smaller overall therefore allowing the rug to completely cover the pad.

Buying carpet can be a challenging task if you go shopping with no knowledge. Allow us to help you take some of the guess work out of the process and offer some helpful tips.

When you shop for carpeting you will want to shop first for the fiber type, then the carpet brand. The type of carpet pile fiber you choose will significantly impact the overall performance of your carpet. In buying carpet make sure you understand the various types of carpet fiber and how each one cleans, mats or crushes, resistance to sunlight fading and stains.

Different types of fiber wear in different ways so it is wise to make your choice on the basis of where the carpet will go and how it will be used.

The price of a carpet depends largely on its fiber content, pile weight, and style. Wool can be rather expensive compared with synthetics.

Synthetic fibers make up 99% of the fiber used by the US carpet industry. Nylon, the best-selling carpet fiber, typically costs more than polyester or olefin and branded fibers cost more than unbranded.

There are highly advertised brands of nylon fiber that are not carpet brands and it may be difficult to distinguish between a fiber brand and a carpet brand. Some examples of fiber brands are Stainmaster and Triexta by DuPont and Wear-Dated by Mohawk.

There is no perfect fiber and carpet is a fabric that is subjected to incredible abuse through foot traffic, accidental spills, environmental contaminants, and other abuses.

On a previous post we documented the making of a very large oversized custom rug for one of our customers. In this post we want to show you some of the advantages of having a custom rug made and illustrate how easy the process is from a design point of view. Of course, the primary advantage of having a custom rug made is that you can choose and design exactly what you want in the colors and size you want.

Below we highlighted two different companies that make custom rugs. The first company makes hand made rugs and the second produces machine made rugs.

#1- Tamarian hand made Tibetan wool rugs from Nepal.

Tamarian rugs are made in Nepal of Tibetan wool. Also known as Nepalese rugs, they are beautiful wool and silk creations. The Tibetan wool is known for its durability, rich texture and subtle color variation.

Creating your own design using as inspiration, fabrics, wallpaper, artwork or pictures is a fantastic way to bring your décor some originality and put your own unique style into a room.

Tamarian also offers a vast array of their patterns and designs to choose from.

Tamarian has over 2500 colors you can choose from or they do custom color matching. In addition the options for knot count and wool to silk content ratio give you even more choices.

Below is a Tamarian rug that was just completed.

This is a Tamarian design using the clients own custom color palette.

The finished product looks exactly like the sketch! The turn around time is about 3-6 months, depending on the size. As you can see the final product is worth the wait to get exactly what you want!

# 2- Dalyn Rug Company

Dalyn manufactures over 150 designs in 450 colors. Machine Made rugs are a less costly alternative to hand made rugs. Dalyn’s designs offer a sophisticated selection of patterns, textures, colors and shapes. They come in a pre-set variety of sizes in wool, nylon and polyester. The price points differ depending on the material and size. The turn around time is about 2 weeks.

Some of our other rug vendors are also capable of customizing their existing products. Momeni will take existing patterns and re-color them to your color palette. Nourison will take existing patterns and make them into sizes up to 16' x 40'.

When your fine rug is in need of some TLC, be sure to have it professionally repaired. We offer a full range of rug repair services. We also do modifications such as adding false fringes or removing fringes.

Hand Made vs Machine Made Rugs

Machine made rugs can have the look of a hand made rug

How to tell the difference between a hand made and a machine made rug

To an untrained eye it may be difficult to tell the difference between hand made and machine made rugs. This simple guide will help you understand the differences.

Hand made rugs are woven or knotted by hand, literally. And machine made rugs are, you guessed it, made by a large machine. These “machines” are actually called power looms and are electrically automated.

There is another type of rug that is considered handmade or hand-crafted. This particular type of rug is made using a modified drill gun that inserts the pile into a cloth foundation and therefore creates a loop pile. If the pile is sheared, the loop pile turns into a cut pile. The loop pile, if not sheared, is called Hand-Hooked and the cut pile is called "Hand-Tufted". These rugs have a handmade look but they cost a lot less because using a gun speeds up the process dramatically. For example a good quality 8 x 10 hand knotted rug would take about 10 to 14 months while the same size rug in a hand-tufted method would take about one week. Hand Tufted rugs are not of value to a rug collector or someone who is looking to buy an Oriental rug as an investment. Handmade rugs are almost always made out of wool and sometimes out of cotton or silk (silk is usually used in highlights of the design). Machine-made rugs are made of wool as well as man-made fibers such as Nylon, Acrylic or Olefin (Polypropylene).

Some fundamentals of a hand made rug:

It must be made of natural fibers. (Wool, cotton or silk).
It must be woven completely by hand.
It must be of Asiatic origin such as Iran, India, Russia, China, Tibet, Nepal, Morocco; hence the term, “Oriental rug”.

A high quality hand made rug can last 3 or 4 generations. An Oriental rug may be genuine and still not be of fine quality. The quality of an Oriental rug is dependent upon the use of the finest wools, the truest of color-fast dyes, and the most skillful hand-weaving techniques.

Machine made rugs lack at least one of the fundamentals above. There are exceptions but machine made rugs usually only last about 20 years.

Lets look at the Back of the Rug

One of the best ways to tell the difference between hand made and machine made is to look at the back of the rug. In hand made rugs the weave and the knots will be slightly uneven and not perfectly uniform. On the other hand a machine made rug will look very uniform and perfectly even. The more detail in the design when looking from the back, the better the quality of the rug. In other words the more knots/weaves per square inch, the more durable the rug will be. If the rug is handmade, it means it took a long time to make it.

Hand-Tufted or Hand-Hooked rugs (made with gun) have a cloth backing and the edges normally do not have a finishing such as serging or binding.

Another easy way to tell the difference is by looking at the finishing used on the edges of the rug. If binding or serging is used, the rug is machine-made. Handmade rugs are always finished on the edges by hand which looks like serging but you do not see the machine stitch tracks on the back.

The Fringes are a giveaway

As you can tell from the picture above of the Machine made rug, it has a sewn on fringe. This is another easy way to tell if the rug is handmade or not. If the fringe is sewn over the end of the rug or if it is added onto the rug as a finishing touch then it is a dead give away the rug is machine made. If the fringe is an extension of the rug as in the picture below, it is handmade.

Clothing designers are stepping into brand new territory — rugs

You admired hip designer Nanette Lepore's peacock-patterned dresses, but they were so three years ago. Now you can resurrect the pattern for your floor.

Lepore has joined a growing list of fashion designers — Calvin Klein and Liz Claiborne (with Nourison), Oscar de la Renta (with elson & co.), Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, Diane Von Furstenberg, Lulu Guinness (with The RUG Company) — all translating their passion for fashion design to floor coverings.

Lepore recently introduced a bold-patterned area rug with her peacock design for the Doris Leslie Blau carpet gallery in New York. The gallery also in early March unveiled two nautically-inspired rugs designed by Tommy Hilfiger (one blue with white anchors, the other navy with a red chain-link pattern).

In a phone interview, Lepore said she was approached by the carpet folks and is happy she did the project, especially since she now has one of her rugs in her own living room.
"The way it transformed my living room with color and a bold pattern, it would be fun to do more of that," the designer said. In fact, she's considering designing another rug for her pool table area that the public may see in stores some day.

What do those in the world of interior design think about fashionistas stepping in?
"I believe good design is good design and a good designer is a good designer," said Thom Filicia, best known as the design expert on the television series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy."

Filicia, who has also designed for celebrity clients including Jennifer Lopez and Marc Antony through his New York firm, Thom Filicia Inc., said the important thing in interior design is understanding people's lifestyles, something fashion designers do well.

"A good designer can transcend from the area they are focused on into other areas and do it very successfully," Filicia said.

But would he recommend consumers start buying area rugs based on what's in their wardrobes?

Filicia said he wouldn't go that far. Still, he has a new show on the Style Network called "Dress My Nest" in which he will use fashion as a springboard to help folks figure out interiors.

"I do think there's a relationship. Saying you want to match your house to your clothes is too literal, but clothes do indicate your point of view, your aesthetic," he said.

"Young and hip or traditional or conservative, you can tell when you see someone," Filicia added. "And you get color from people's wardrobes."

Filicia will also soon launch a series of seminars in U.S. cities as spokesman for Karastan carpets. His big advice: Designing from the floor up is a good start.

"When they (his clients) don't know where to begin, I tell them to start from the rug, in terms of colors and what sets the tone whether classical or modern, or whatever."
And yes, he foresees having his own rug line (in addition to furniture and bedding), but not for a year or two.

Designer Lepore said what was appealing to her about designing rugs was that rug patterns have a longer shelf life.

"People don't change their homes as much as they change their closets," she said.
As for the trend of fashion designers stepping into rug design, she said, it brings "a fresh eye" and new brands that will create more interest.

Julie Rosenblum, brand manager for Nourison, the manufacturer of the Calvin Klein and Liz Claiborn carpets, agreed.

"In this day and age people associate certain looks and concepts with fashion designers," Rosenblum said. "It's reaffirming to the consumer that the product has a point of view and they understand that point of few."

Rosenblum said she suspects more fashion designers will introduce area rugs, and that's a good thing. "It brings rugs to the forefront. They (the consumer) may not know who the manufacturer is. What they know is there's a line by that designer. It takes the business to a whole new level."

The Making of a Custom Rug

Sometimes a client wants a special rug made specifically to their criteria. We proudly offer this service to our customers.

These pictures walk you through the process of making a custom rug in India for one of our clients.

This particular rug was quite a grand project. Although your project may not require such a large undertaking, this demonstrates the level of craftsmanship we are capable of attaining for you.

This client wanted a rug that could cover a basketball court measuring 20’ x 40’. They chose the colors and style they wanted. They also requested to have their family crest woven into the design.

Here are the steps to making a rug!

Design the Pattern.

Draw the family crest onto the pattern.

Choose the wool. This is premium lambs wool from New Zealand.

Dye the wool to the match the chosen colors.

Transitional Style Design

Transitional style is simple but elegant

Many who currently have traditional style decor are now seeking to bring a more contemporary look to their conventionally decorated rooms. Transitional style interior design is just the right solution.

Transitional style has become popular because of the importance of comfort and relaxation in our homes. The trend is also growing due to the versatility of Transitional style. You can mix traditional and contemporary pieces and create a comfortable, eclectic look.

The label "transitional" can cause confusion for some. Transitional style is the blending of traditional and contemporary to create an elegant and timeless look. Transitional is distinctive because it has a comfortable yet classic feel. Think of it as “updated classic”.

Color

The color palette tends to be very subtle with an emphasis on cremes, ivory, tan, beige and taupe. Dark browns or a pop of orange or aqua adds depth to the neutral palette. The simple color palette is relaxing and uncomplicated to evoke a clean, serene atmosphere.

Furnishings

It is best to keep furnishings understated. Choose furniture that isn’t too masculine or feminine, making it comfortable for all. The lines of transitional furniture are typically straight with the occasional soft, sweeping curve thrown in for good measure.

Proper scale is key to making sure the space feels balanced and appropriate. An emphasis should be placed on moderately scaled pieces that exude an unassuming, refined style. Because of the simplistic designs in the furnishings, Shaker style and Mission style furniture is often a nice match for transitional style interior design.

Fabrics

Fabric patterns are usually tone-on-tone designs or small scale graphic elements. Updated, uncluttered floral patterns work well.

When it comes to area rugs, Transitional style is a wonderful way to enhance or update your décor. A tone on tone rug or a beautiful updated floral can add just the right amount of color and interest to your room.

Final tips

Transitional style is by nature a little bit eclectic. By using common elements to your advantage you can avoid a disjointed feeling to your space. If pieces in your room are a different style, unify them. For example use the same wood finish for furniture. Use the same fabric colors or graphic elements for textiles and the same textures or patterns in area rugs and accessories.

Go for it! Make the transition to Transitional style!

Rug Buying In India

Mark travels to India once a year for rug buying and this was David’s inaugural trip. This trip was important because Mark wanted to bring David to the various rug producing villages so he could see the process of weaving and finishing of rugs first hand.

India is a major rugs producing country partly as a result of a 20 year embargo against Persian (Iranian) products. Genuine Persian rugs became hard to obtain and this was actually a good thing in the long run for the industry because it resulted in a renaissance of the art of rug weaving and Oriental rug production. India now produces some of the finest Oriental rugs available.

The buying process starts with a visit to the rug manufacturer’s showroom to see their latest products.

How to Measure Your Space for the Correct Rug Size

LIVING ROOM, FAMILY ROOM, DEN, GREAT ROOM:

Place your furniture where you think is best for the room. Measure the open space up to the sofa and chairs, making sure that when seated, both of your feet should be on the rug. Allow approximately 8-12 inches of exposed floor between baseboards and rug on all sides. More than one rug is acceptable.

DO anchor your rug to the furniture.

DON’T "float" a rug in a room.

DINING ROOM:

DO use your dining room chairs to help you measure what size rug you’ll need. Pull the chairs away from the table, as you would to sit down, on both sides and the ends. Measure from the rear chair legs in width and length. Add 8 inches to this total measurement. This will give you the minimum size rug needed.

BEDROOMS:

If the rug is under the bed, allow 3 feet of exposed rug on both sides of the bed.

GENERAL:

DO try to allow about 8 inches of exposed floor around the baseboards on all sides when using a rug to cover most of the floor in a room. More than one rug is acceptable.

DON’T place a rug in a room so that it ends in the middle of the doors or archway openings.

Removing Stains from an Oriental Rug

Spills and stains on your Oriental rug are a nuisance but you can spot clean your rug if you use the proper agent for the type of spill you are dealing with.

For best results we recommend the use of the appropriate antidote and procedure. Use our chart as a guide.

Blotting and stain removing procedure:

Work quickly
Blot up all excess spill with paper towels.
Don’t Rub.
Apply antidote as shown on list with a clean dry cloth, working from the edge to the center.
Do not soak.
Pat with paper towels. Dry with fan or hair blower.
Restore pile with clothes brush.

CANDLE WAX: Place a blotter or brown paper bag over the spot. Put a hot iron over the blotter. Wait a minute or so until the wax is absorbed into the blotter. Move the iron constantly and do not let it stay in one place. Repeat if necessary.

CHEWING GUM: Press ice cubes against spot. Wait until it becomes brittle and breaks off. Use spot remover to vanish last traces. Saturate the spot with cloth soaked in vinegar or alcohol.

INK FROM BALLPOINT PEN: Saturate the spot with hairspray. Allow to dry. Brush lightly with a solution of water and vinegar.

How to Choose an Oriental Rug

Believe it or not handmade Oriental rugs fall into the category of art work. Unlike paintings and sculpture, Oriental rugs can be used throughout their lifetime and represent one of the best investments you can make. They can be enjoyed as an art form, useful in their utility as a floor covering and represent an investment that will appreciate in value over time. They can also be passed down from generation to generation as it is not uncommon to find rugs over 100 years old that remain in usable condition.

At 50 years an Oriental rug is considered semi-antique.

At 100 years an Oriental rug is considered an antique.

The 3 fundamentals of an authentic Oriental rug are:

• It must be made of natural fibers. (Wool, cotton or silk).

• It must be woven completely by hand.

• It must be of Asiatic origin such as Iran, India, Russia, China, Tibet, Nepal, Morocco; hence the term, “Oriental rug”.

Machine made Oriental design rugs lack at least one of these requirements and usually only last about 20 years. Where-as a high quality hand made rug can last 3 or 4 generations. An Oriental rug may be genuine and still not be of fine quality. The quality of an Oriental rug is dependent upon the use of the finest wools, the truest of color-fast dyes, and the most skillful hand-weaving techniques.

Some factors that determine the quality of Oriental rugs are:

• Consistent weave; are there flaws in the weave? Look on the back side of the rug to detect irregular weaving.
• The rug should lie smoothly on the floor; does it ripple, pucker or wrinkle?
• Consistent dyes; is the dye colorfast? Compare the colors on the front and back of the rug to determine if the rug has faded.
• Straight edges and ends; the selvedges or the sides of the rug should be straight and properly secured.
• Width dimensions should be the same at both ends.
• Well finished ends; is the fringe straight and neatly cut? Rugs with-out fringe should have ends that are finished in a neat and secure manner.
• Good long-staple, high elevation wool.
• High knot count; the tighter the knot, the higher the knot count and therefore the more valuable the rug. (The knot count can vary from as few as 20 to as high as 500 or more knots per square inch).

• Has the carpet been washed; this should have been a light soap and water wash. (Once you have purchased your rug it is best to let a professional rug dealer clean it for you).
